Case contributed by Dr Vinay V Belaval

Epigastric pain

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Male

Axial contrast enhanced images of upper abdomen in arterial phase show pancreas completely encircling the second part of duodenum, consistent with complete annular pancreas. No obstruction is seen.

Annotated image

Annotated image of arterial phase shows complete encasement of duodenum (labeled as D) by the enhancing pancreatic parenchyma (labeled as P).

Case Discussion

Annular pancreas is a result of ventral bud non-rotation resulting in varying degrees of encasement of duodenum by the pancreas. Complete annular pancreas presents in neonates with obstruction and can be incidentally found in adults, as in our case. Pancreatitis can be a presenting feature in adults.
