Incidental finding in patient presenting with chest pain.

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Female

Complete bony ankylosis of the manubriosternal joint was an incidental finding.

Case Discussion

Complete bony ankylosis of the manubriosternal joint has been documented in approximately 5% of normal people 1. In a cadaveric study, a correlation was found between increasing age and likelihood of fusion 2. It can also be seen in those with rheumatological disease, e.g. ankylosing spondylitis.
