Intraosseous hemangioma of the femur

Case contributed by Dr Vougiouklis Nikos

Left hip pain.

Patient Data

Age: 80 yrs
Gender: Female

Oblique reconstructed CT from thin-section CT axial images demonstrates a mixed dense and lytic lesion expanding the metaphysis of the left femur. This is non-aggressive lesion as it has narrow margins, no periosteal reaction and no soft tissue mass.

Coarsened trabeculae fill the modularly cavity and affect the cortex too.
The bone density of the femoral neck, of the trochanters and of the femoral epiphysis is diminished.

Case Discussion

A diagnosis of hemangioma was given after a biopsy 11 years ago.
