Linitis plastica

Case contributed by Dr Mahomed A. Osman

Epigastric pain and weight loss.

Patient Data

Age: 65
Gender: Male

The stomach is diffusely thickened throughout and demonstrates loss of the normal mucosal fold pattern. This appearance is highly suggestive of adenocarcinoma of the stomach & biopsy is suggested.

There is no evidence of nodal involvement or other metastases within the section imaged.

Case Discussion

Linitis plastica is a diffuse thickening of the stomach and reduction in lumen size that ultimately results in a 'water bottle' like appearance of the stomach. The causes are many, but most commonly scirrhous gastric adenocarcinoma.
