Metaplastic carcinoma left breast

Case contributed by Dr Garth Kruger

Palpable lesion left breast

Patient Data

Age: 70
Gender: Female

Notice how the lesion is high density and has areas of spiculation and well defined margins in places, in the same lesion. These two findings, if present, are highly suggestive of a metaplastic carcinoma.

On the annotated image, the arrows show "smooth" margins between the areas of spiculated margins. Quite strange once you start to pick up on it.

The mixed ecchogenicity is as a result of focal areas of necrosis and hemorrhage.
