Polycystic liver disease

Case contributed by Dr Daniel J Bell

Acute epigastric pain and distension

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male

Innumerable simple cysts throughout the enlarged liver and both kidneys consistent with known polycystic disease. Most of the cysts demonstrate pure fluid density, a few show slightly increased density (15-20 HU), likely representing old hemorrhage and/or proteinaceous material.  No intracystic high density to suggest acute hemorrhage into a cyst.

Case Discussion

Polycystic liver disease and multicystic kidneys. No cysts within the other solid viscera.
