Stasis nephropathy

Case contributed by Dr Hani Salam

Patient Data

Age: Neonate

The US of both kidneys demonstrate echogenic renal pyramids.

Case Discussion

This is a common finding, seen frequently in newborns caused by deposition of Tamm-Horsfall proteins in the renal tubules. The condition is self limited and may or may not be associated with oliguria (i.e. could be incidental finding) and should not be mistaken for nephrocalcinosis.
